We made the short drive from St. George to Las Vegas through Virgin River Canyon. The drive through the canyon is beautiful and steep. It’s hard to imagine what one river can do. We stayed at the North Las Vegas Elks Club and after getting set up we drove to Downtown Las Vegas and then to the Strip. Downtown has really changed since we were here last. Fremont Street is closed to traffic and is encompassed in a tunnel of lights. We couldn’t believe how many new hotels are under construction along the Strip. There were crowds of people – no evidence of a financial downturn here!

Now for the fun part – we had been having some trouble with the front door of our motorhome. The frame around the door had come loose so Mike needed to replace the screws. He tested them, one at a time, and when he was almost finished the door stuck and we couldn’t get it open. I was inside and he was outside. He had to get the ladder out and climb into the dinette window. He worked on the door for about 5 hours – took everything apart – with no avail. During this time Mike was climbing in and out of the window. Imagine an 80 year old doing that – no one but Mike could. He tried using a sledge hammer and accidentally hit is hand which began bleeding profusely. After we got the bleeding to stop and patched him up he continued to work. We couldn’t decide if it was one of the screws or something in the locking mechanism. Finally we gave up and went to bed.

In the morning Mike went to the local Lowe’s and bought a hack saw which he used to saw the area where we thought the screw was stuck. It worked and the door opened. I was never so glad to have an open door in my life. Then he had to put everything back together again. What a guy!!!!

My brother, Jim, who lives in Searchlight, Nevada, came to see us today. We had a wonderful time visiting and catching up. In the evening we took another ride along the Strip to see the lights. What a madhouse!!
