Happy belated Thanksgiving to all our American readers! We are back home after our travel in Israel with a stop in the island of Tenerife , located in the Canary Isalnds off the west coast of Africa. Since our return to the U.S., we even squeezed in a trip to NC for the Thanksgiving holiday.
In lieu of the usual play-by-play account, let’s call this our Tenerife Top Five:
1. Summit to the top of Mt. Teide . With a permit in hand, we were one of the 150 lucky folks that day to climb up 12,188 ft and reach the highest point in Spain. The last volcanic eruption of this moutain was 100 years ago but it’s technically considered “dormant active.” I’m glad it didn’t erupt on the day we visited!
2. Punta de Teno. At the western most point the island, we arrived at this point after a harrowing 10-kilometer one lane road the hugged the mountainside. Our reward? Waves crashing into gigantic cliffs, the sun re-emerged and we could spot the silhouette of the island of la Gomera in the distance. Though it’s all rocky, by far the most fantastic and breath taking beach on the island.
3. Puerto de la Cruz. This town was home to our favorite tapas joints, tourist advice, and of course our hotel. We miss you Beatriz!
4. Masca. Not sure what the highlight really was: this tiny town high in the hills, or the walk down the ravine into the sea (we could only go halfway down the 3 hour walk), or maybe the winding one-lane highway which snakes through mountains just to get there.
5. Madrid. We’re not in the Canaries anymore, but thanks an airline ticketing mistake, we enjoyed a short visit there with Davide and Irene. It was easy to soak in the city’s vibrant energy and delicious tapas.
Goodbye sunny Spain and the Canaries and hello Chicago winter! Thanks for coming along on our two fabulous trips this past year! If we decide to travel full time we’ll let you know where to find us in the real world and the blog world.
All our love,
Jaspreet & Itay
