Rotorua- a Geothermal Wonderland
Travel Location: Rotorua,New-Zealand
We headed toward Rotorua, a town on the southern shore of Lake Rotorua in the Bay of Plenty region of the North Island of New Zealand. Initially we were going to a tour of the Lord of the Rings film set of Hobbitin, however it was quite expensive ($50.00 a person), and we decided that we would rather go on a farm tour at The Agrodome. There we got to see a kiwi fruit orchard, and got to taste kiwi fruit wine (which wasn’t too bad actually, really sweet). Then we got to feed sheep, deer, ostriches, and lamas. We felt a little childish, but there were more adults there than children, so we were ok. Then we headed over to a thermal activity park called Wai- O- Tapu (the “Geothermal Wonderland”). Tourists call Rotorua “Rottenrua” due to the rotting egg-like odor of the Hydrogen Sulphide gas produce by the prolific geothermal activity. While Rotorua smelled pretty bad, it was completely worth it to see the beautiful champagne pool. I got some of the loveliest pictures there. After all that walking we were ready to make our way back to Auckland which is a 2-3 hour drive. Shaw was really getting better at driving; I still don’t feel the need to try it though!
