Rio Grande, Argentina
Travel Location: Rio-Grande,Falkland-Islands
Going by bus, I would cross the Strait of Magellan on my way to Ushuaia. Technically I would actually be leaving the South American continent, landing on the Island of Tierra del Fuego. Literally “Land of Fire”, passing ships named this area as they continued to see fires along the distant shorelines tended by the local Yahgan people. This land is also recognized as the end of the world, the southernmost area prior to Antarctica. Most of the northern part of Tierra del Fuego is similar to Patagonia with stretches of flat, treeless plains. But in the south and along the coasts lie the true natural beauty of scenic mountains, glaciers, clear waterways and forests. Eventually I would get there, but I was still excited to cross the Strait of Magellan. I just couldn’t believe I was here, an area that an explorer named Magellan made famous almost 500 years earlier.
