To Market, to market
Travel Location: Phnom-Penh,Cambodia
To market, to market………….to eat, eat and eat! The kids saw the noodle soup in the market yesterday and were keen as beans to try it today. So we had the traditional Khmer breakfast – noodle soup, and they loved it so much we returned for more tonight for dinner. I just hope they don’t get sick! They have also discovered freshly cut coconut juice and sugar cane/lime juice. For dessert they had a fruit smoothie. The fruit here is fantastic and Zara being the little fruit fiend that she is, can’t get enough of all the exotic fruits, her favourite being the tiny sour mandarins and sweet lamuts!
The two main difference from 12 yrs ago are the fact that the roads are all covered with bitumen and there are very few maimed/disabled beggers. I asked about the issue re the beggars and apparently they have rounded them all up and placed them in a particular area of P.P. We went passed it today and it is a huge area surrounded by freshly painted blue corrugated iron. The fact too that there are an abundance of NGO’s helping skill and house the street people has also reduced the numbers. There are many quaint little businesses offering handmade items crafted by the disabled and homeless. We purchased little wallets today from one of these organisations – it was actually made from recycled rice bags – very creative.
We have booked the bus for Siem Reap on Friday 27 – returning via boat on Thursday 3rd. Dropped off the bag of clothes to the orphanage today, hope to catch up with them when we return from Siem Reap.
Dad, the computer has been a godsend – thank you! In the evenings or early mornings when the kids are asleep or winding down I am able to log on easily and add to this blog whilst chilling in the cafe downstairs from our guesthouse. For the most part, the kids are just happy street watching as there is so much going on. They try to see who can spot the most stuff/people on a motorbike.
