A Grand Harbour view
Travel Location: Hong-Kong,China
Dawn broke as we were flying over Kazakstan 6hours into our trip from London having been routed over the Baltic and down through Moscow. The skies stayed clear as we passed over what seemed endless desert and the into the northern edges of the Himalayan massif and then acroos to Chengdu and Hong Kong. It makes one realise just how much of the earths surface is hostile. Landing at Hong Kong is a sedate affair these days. Our last trip was into the old Kai Tak airport which was more hairy than any theme park ride. This was a smooth gentle glide into a light airy and spacious Foster designed airport with a comfortable transit intio Hong Kong Central on the airport express. We prepaid our ticket and had a 3 day Octopus card ( similar to an Oyster card – they had it first!)for the MTR system – a really good deal and so convenient. The hotel had a free bus from the station which we just missed and decided on a taxi which cost 5 pounds- would have been 20 in London. So we arrived at the Grand Harbour View Hotel and grand it is. Lots of marble and crystal glass. Our receptionist Lily Ying was a lovely girl with a good sense of humour who forgot November only has 30 days and was booking us in for an extra night. Having sorted that out she tapped away on the computer and proudly announced she had given us a free upgrade to the executive floors and a room with a superb view on the 39th floor. Oh my god I exclaimed which she took as delight I am pleased to say rather than the oh my god I suffer from vertigo please god don’t let there be floor to ceiling windows that I really meant! The room was superb and was ok as long as I didn’t look straight down.
