Day 44 – Agnes Water to Rainbow Beach
Travel Location: Rainbow-Beach,Australia
We had a five hundred kilometre drive in front of us and so were on the way early. We passed Bundaberg where the famous Rum is coming from and reached Rainbow Beach (respectively the petrol station before) just after noon. Rainbow Beach is famous for the multiple coloured sand and they say there are 72 different shades of sand. Just north of the town is a national park on a sand bank which is just south across a bay from Frasier Island. It is there, on Inskip point, where we intended to camp for two days. The camping places there have minimum facilities, that means two of the four have just toilets and the other two do not even have them. We have to take water in canisters for shower and this is the first (and last) time we make use of our solar camp shower. The solar shower is basically a black plastic bag filled with water and heated up by the sun that is hung from a tree.
We met up with Lizzy and the three boys. They drove from Brisbane for two nights of camping. We put up our fly net tent and the good thing was that the boys enjoyed to help and within a short time three tents, chairs and the shower were up and we ready for a swim. Oh, I have to mention that we got stuck in the sand with our bush camper again (second time since Kangaroo Island). This time it was much more difficult to get out and we burnt the clutch. It is still working but black smoke came from it and it smelled for hours.
There is a nice sandy beach in front of the camp ground. It was very windy and the waves a bit too high for snorkelling. Nevertheless we tried it and the boys had fun spotting some fishes and a little crab. In the evening we had a BBQ and had to call an early night because of heavy rain.
